Chief Morrow Memorial Fund
"Bill - The Man Who Made the
Difference"
May 2000
| Dear
Friends and Supporters:
We are happy to report that the Chief Morrow Memorial Fund is off to a strong start. In the event you could not be with us in September, the dedication of the permanent memorial to Bill at the Somers Point beach (shown above) was a great success. Some 200 former boys and girls club members and their families – plus a sizeable turnout by the extended Morrow family – attended what was a wonderful event and enjoyable evening. There is also encouraging news to report regarding initial financial support. Thanks to the generosity of many of you, individual contributions to the Chief Morrow Memorial Fund, which have ranged from $25 to $2,500 each, now total some $17,000. Additionally, the McDowell family as a group, in the memory of their parents, Kathryn and Samuel McDowell, has committed $50,000 payable over four years, with its initial $25,000 grant paid in 1999. As a result, the Memorial Fund now stands at $67,000 in contributions and committed pledges. Currently the fund has some $25,500 invested in interest-bearing instruments, net of having paid approximately $4,000 for the memorial plus incidental startup and mailing expense. Our success in minimizing these costs has been aided greatly by the fact that everyone involved has volunteered his or her services, including Harry Scott and Art Ford who have provided all accounting and legal services, respectively, free to the organization. It also helped that the fund secured federal tax-exempt status (No. 31-1676145), making 1999 and all future contributions deductible for those who itemize their US tax return.

With a
modest income stream now in place, the Board has approved the organization’s
first program efforts, underwriting the full cost ($380 each) of sending
both a boy and a girl to the local summer camp this year. You can be
certain of one thing: they will be outstanding Somers Point youths, and
from families that could not otherwise afford such an enriching summer
experience for their children. With anticipated increases in interest
income in 2000, we plan to expand the program in 2001, providing both
summer camp experiences for current students and a scholarship grant for
one or more high school graduates. Hopefully, as interest income continues
to grow – a reality that can only occur through a mix of additional
contributions to the fund, wise investment of fund proceeds and continued
prudent management of the program – the Chief Morrow Memorial Fund can
further increase its program efforts.
We thank each and every one of you has already contributed to the fund, and urge you, if possible, to consider renewing the possibly increasing your pledge for 2000. For those who have not yet contributed, we and your fellow former boys/girls club members urge you to do so. What we collectively contributed in these first few years will determine to a very great extent our success in fulfilling the Chief’s legacy to Somers Point youth. Contributions made payable to the Chief Morrow Memorial Fund can be mailed to Phil Huber at the address below. Phil also can be reached at (609)927-2604. Our pledge to you is to keep you fully informed about the organization’s financial status and expanding program efforts, and to oversee the program in a way that brings great credit to the memory of Bill Morrow. We welcome your comments and suggestions on what we as your Board of Directors could do differently or do better to advance the organization’s efforts on behalf of the Chief. Thank you. |
