Web site makes point
Somers Point may not have an official Web site, but one hometown page is getting a
lot of attention lately.
www.somerspoint.org was created on a whim two months ago by a former Somers Point, now Fresno, Calif.,
resident who simply wanted to keep in touch with hometown friends and news.
Bill Winslow, 63, and two Somers Point friends e-mailed stories and old pictures to one
another. After a while, Winslow decided others might be interested in seeing the photos
and hearing about people.
He developed the Web site with friends Joan Bird Wilson and Bill Carr. In just one
month it received 300 visitors.
"People have contacted me that I haven't heard from in 45 years," he said.
"This site has taken off beyond my wildest dreams."
Who said reunions can't be virtual?

Treasure Found in
Somers Point
Somers
Point NJ--Negatives have been found
after fifty years in a closet by LouAnn and
Richie Rest. LouAnn is a Grand-daughter
of Sherman S. Winslow Sr. Winslow was
the last of the
all-round photographers. His photographs
can be seen in many reference
books in the local library. Many of
his customers were
local townspeople wanting
family portraits.
During the war pictures of our
fighting men could be found on a table, piano or
fireplace mantel in their homes.
The newly-found negatives are of those men.
Also among the two hundred plus
negatives are
assorted pictures of people, places and
things, treasures of interest to all Pointers.
This editor will begin to sort and convert
these negatives into
pictures for your Pointers WebSite.
If a picture appears without a name please
contact the editor
if you can identify the subject.
The new library opened in
the old city hall building on October 2, 2000, receiving rave reviews by
"The Current" newspaper. A formal dedication of the building is
scheduled for November 11, 2000, at 12:00, following the Veteran's Day
ceremony.
The new state of the art library has many new computers, one of
which was donated by Marta Martin in memory of her husband, our former
Mayor Tony Martin. The new building is fully handicapped-accessible,
including an elevator. The view from the second floor windows overlooking
the bay has attracted many daytime readers who sit in the lounge area by
the hour.
