Troop 53

Mr. Moncrief Scout Master

Bill (Monk) Moncrief Sr. had a profound impact on my life as it had to so many other boys in The Point.  Mr. Moncrief's leadership as the scout master stands out in my memory vividly.

He, like many other men of our town, looked out for us kids. His home was open to us for scout meetings and other activities. He allowed us to camp out in his back yard as a group in mountain tents he obtained somewhere. (Rain or shine.)  I am sure it was through his contact with some of the local town's business leaders.  There were so many that contributed to help us kids.

I remember every camp out that I attended.  He took us to places of interest, taught us to be fair, and to get along with one another. He made us say the scout oath and laws at every meeting. I remember them to this day. One trip was to the Navel Station in Pomona.

We were impressed with the aircraft displays and the air show. While a pilot was performing a demonstration he crashed his aircraft no more that 100 yards from where we were. It was tragic to think a young man had just died before our eyes.

Frank DeFeo (owner of De Feo's Duck Ranch) allowed us to use a house as a scout-house that he owned in Scullville a few miles west of Somers Point. . I remember attending many meetings there. Sometimes our mothers would, on special occasions, attend and make hot chocolate for us.

The picture below is a group loading up for a two week camp out at Camp Edge in Gaoway Township. This picture (1945) was in my personal collection I found forty years later.
